Baptism at Cathedral 101 is conducted in English, with Portuguese elements available if the family prefers. The font is original to the building, a shallow limestone basin that has been in place since the structure was first consecrated in the late nineteenth century. This is what the process looks like.
Who can be baptised ¶
We baptise infants and adults. For infant baptisms, we ask that at least one parent or guardian is willing to attend two preparation meetings and at least two Sunday services before the date. This is not a test. It is simply a way for the congregation to know who you are before the day, and for you to know something of the community your child is being welcomed into.
The preparation meetings ¶
Two meetings are held in the weeks before the baptism. The first is a general conversation about the meaning of baptism and what the service involves. The second is a practical run-through of the order of service. Both meetings are with Reverend Thomas Alcott and take about an hour. They can be held at the church or, for families based outside Cascais, by video call.
The service ¶
Baptisms usually take place within the regular Sunday morning service at 10:30, so the congregation is present. This is intentional. The community makes promises during the service, not just the family. The font is at the front of the church, to the left of the altar. The service takes approximately twenty minutes within the broader order of worship.
Godparents ¶
Godparents are welcome but not required. If you are bringing godparents who are not familiar with Anglican worship, Reverend Thomas Alcott can send them a brief note in advance explaining what to expect and what they will be asked to say during the service.
Cost ¶
There is no charge for a baptism at Cathedral 101. A donation to the church is welcome but never expected. If you would like to mark the occasion with flowers in the church, we ask that you arrange these yourself and let us know in advance so we can ensure the building is prepared.
To arrange a baptism, email hello@cathedral101.com with the name and date of birth of the person to be baptised and your preferred timeframe. Reverend Thomas Alcott will reply within two working days.
